Her Day, Her Month, Her History

There are 60 seconds in every hour. There are 24 hours in every day. There are 30 to 31 days in every month. There are 365 days in a year — except on those special occasions when there are 366. There are twelve whole months in a year.

With all those seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months, there is still not enough time to share the facts about every woman who has shaped history in one way or another. Some of the most influential women are written about in the history books. Some of them, though, lived and died without ever having been known outside of their communities.

One of my favorite writers is Chloe Anthony Wofford Morrison. You know her as Toni Morrison. Born and raised in Lorain, Ohio, Morrison graduated from Howard University in 1953 with a B.A. in English. In 1955, she earned a master’s degree in American Literature from Cornell University. She had a tremendous amount of influence on my decision to become a writer. She said,

“If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”

That is exactly what I’m going to do.

She wrote The Bluest Eye. That book shifted my mindset. In my own way, I was Pecola. As a child, I thought I was ugly. I wasn’t, but I sure did think I was. Why? Because I didn’t have long, blond hair. I didn’t…
